As the taste of mom’s food makes its way into the amniotic fluid, the fetus enjoys flavors and becomes accustomed to the food of his culture. A preference for sweets is shown by more frequent and vigorous swallowing after mom has eaten a treat!

A fetus starts to hear sounds at just 16 weeks and by 22 weeks after conception hearing is complete and functional. The watery sounds of the womb, mom’s heartbeat, and especially mom’s voice comfort the baby. Loud, unfamiliar sounds may cause the fetus to cry - complete with a chin quiver.
