Protecting Life: Marrying Truth and Compassion

Culture often pressures people to believe they must choose between truth and compassion. However, when it comes to protecting life, that choice is not only unnecessary – it is a false choice.  The pro-life movement affirms that scientific truth and genuine compassion are not at odds – they go hand in hand.

If we want to be effective in protecting life, we must clearly present the science of when life begins and respond tenderly to the challenges women face. It is in this union of truth and compassion that we find the foundation for protecting life.

The Truth Behind Protecting Life: Human Life Begins at Conception

At the core of this issue is the scientific fact that each human life begins at conception. Fertilization creates a new, genetically unique human being, distinct from both its mother and father. Nothing further genetically will be added – only time and nourishment are needed from that point.

Dr. Jerome LeJeune, professor of genetics at the University of Descartes in Paris, was the discoverer of the chromosome pattern of Down syndrome. Dr. LeJeune testified to the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee, “after fertilization has taken place a new human being has come into being.” He stated that this “is no longer a matter of taste or opinion,” and “not a metaphysical contention, it is plain experimental evidence.” He added, “Each individual has a very neat beginning, at conception.”

Abortion ends a human life. That truth is foundational to any conversation about protecting life.

Compassion Is a Crucial Part of Protecting Life

While truth grounds the pro-life view, protecting life must also involve deep compassion for women. Many women who seek abortion are not doing so lightly – they are overwhelmed, afraid, or under pressure from partners, families, or finances.

Compassion isn’t optional. It’s essential. We must show women what’s possible and walk with them through it.

Protecting life means providing real alternatives to abortion:

When we meet women where they are, we reflect the heart behind the pro-life movement: to affirm life and dignity for all.

How You Can Help Protect Life

If you’re ready to take action to protect life, here are a few meaningful steps:

  • Learn the science of fetal development and share it with others.
  • Offer support to women in your community facing unplanned pregnancies.
  • Volunteer at or donate to local pregnancy resource centers.
  • Use your voice online to promote both truth and compassion.
  • Encourage adoption as a life-affirming option.

Protecting Life Is a Call to Both Courage and Compassion

Protecting life isn’t just a cause. It’s the compassion issue of our day. It means respecting and helping all human beings, born and unborn.

We don’t have to choose between caring for babies and caring for their mothers. We can and must do both.
